National Science and Mathematics to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant SAP

If you are interested in renewing your SMART Grant award, you are encouraged to do so by filing your renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than March 31, prior to the upcoming academic year.

In addition to meeting the general eligibility requirements for the SMART Grant (i.e., Pell eligibility, enrolled at least half time, etc.), you must also meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements to maintain your eligibility. Failure to do so will result—according to federal regulations—in you no longer being eligible to receive the Grant.

A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to students who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology and engineering or in a foreign language determined vital to national security.

Cumulative GPA
To receive the National SMART Grant, you must:
  • Have a 3.0 cumulative overall GPA at the end of your sophomore year (60 hours)
  • Maintain a 3.0 cumulative overall GPA each semester, thereafter, your GPA is checked every semester prior to disbursement of funds.
